Changes in Policies Related to HIV Testing: Informatics Support

Changes in VHA policies and practice related to HIV testing effective August 17, 2009 may require support of informatics staff to assure alignment of electronic tools with current policy. Changes may be required to reflect:

  1. Removal of the requirement that patients provide written informed consent for HIV testing
See: VHA Informed Consent for Clinical Treatments and Procedures (VHA Handbook 1004.01)
  2. Voluntary provision of routine HIV testing
See: Testing for Human Immunodeficiency Virus in Veterans Health Administration Facilities (VHA Directive 1113)

The following are among items that may require revision:

  • HIV-related progress note templates
  • HIV-related Clinical Reminder definitions and/or dialogs
  • Note templates
  • Lab tests (including special comments)
  • Order menus that include HIV testing
  • Any other locally created practice support tools related to HIV testing

Clinicians who have created personal templates related to HIV testing should also revise/update them as required. We encourage close cooperation between clinicians and informatics staff/ADPACs to assure consistency and compliance with current policy.
