FAQ: Can I use it for PrEP??

for Veterans and the Public

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I heard that Descovy is a safer version of Truvada. Can I use it for PrEP?

No. Descovy is very similar to Truvada, although it contains a newer form of one ingredient. Descovy is effective in treating HIV but it has not been studied as a medicine to prevent HIV. There are some reasons to be concerned that Descovy may not work as well as Truvada if used for PrEP. So, until we have more evidence that Descovy prevents HIV in uninfected individuals, we recommend that you not use Descovy for PrEP. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved Descovy to be used as PrEP.
