Q: What is PrEP 2-1-1?

PrEP is a daily medication (Truvada or Descovy) that is highly effective at preventing HIV. PrEP 2-1-1 refers to taking PrEP before and after sex instead of daily. Two pills are taken before 2-24 hours before sex. Then, one pill is taken 24 hours after that, and one pill is taken 48 hours after the first dose. It is important to note that PrEP 2-1-1 is not FDA approved. This method is more effective for men who have sex with men. It is not appropriate for women. The dosing can be difficult to manage with frequent sex. It can also be difficult to predict ahead of time when you will be having sex. For these reasons, regular, daily PrEP is preferred and more effective at preventing HIV.
